Hide Preparation and Shipping Guidelines

Preparing Your Hide:

Preparing your skin or hide for a trip to our workshop takes a bit of planning, but the increase in quality you’ll receive by following these simple steps will be well worth your time investment:

  1. Clean Your Hide Thoroughly
Be sure to pull away as much of the flesh at fat as possible from your hide before preparing it for shipping. Since your pelt will be stored prior to entering our workshop, leaving too much muscle or fatty tissue attached to the skin highly increases the chances of bacterial contamination, and this contamination is the primary cause of damage during the tanning process.

  1. Remove any Foreign Material
Whether you’re a trapper or a hunter, please make sure that there are no metal, plastic, or wood objects in or on your hide prior to shipping. Nails, wires, tags, staples, shot, or any other form of hard material will interfere with the tanning process and dramatically reduce the quality of your finished product.

  1. Facial Preparation
If your hide is shipping with the head attached, be sure to flesh the face and split the eyelids, nose, and lips before shipping. This again minimizes the chances of bacterial contamination. Also, be sure to turn the ears so that they stay firmly in place.

Shipping Your Hide:

When you’ve finished preparing your hide, be sure that you ship it properly. Please follow these guidelines for the best results:

  • Proper packaging should be somewhat breathable. A cardboard box or burlap bag is best.
  • You should never pack your hide in airtight plastic – this allows the skin to retain moisture, which leads to bacterial growth.
  • Your skin should be dried and salted prior to shipping.
  • Skins should never be shipped wet for any reason.
